Grass Seeding
Planting grass and wildflowers is done in either spring or fall. After the lot has been levelled and thoroughly raked, dolomite lime is liberally spread, with most lots using a full pallet of lime (one ton). There is a lot of organic matter in the top layer of soil on Sidney Island from leaves, needles, and rotting wood. This is very acidic, dolomite lime is used to balance the PH levels in the soil.
We plant high altitude (drought resistant) meadow grass seed mix using 50-100 kilos of seed per lot. If you are going to fence your property a wild flower mix can also be planted.
We seed using a cultivator/seeder unit called a plotmaster towed behind an ATV. This unit can disc the soil, spread seed, lime or nitrogen, cover with soil and compact with a weighted roller in a single pass.
